Ball gown, June 1948 in Vogue, photographed by Cecil Beaton.
I was introduced to Charles James in his studio at The Chelsea Hotel in 1968 by Miquel Ferreras, a former student of his. I recall very little about the meeting; as Robin Williams said, if you remember the 60's you weren't there.
Charles James: Beyond Fashion, May 8th to August 10th 2014 in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitain Museum of Art "explores James's design process, focusing on his use of sculptural, scientific, and mathematical approaches to construct revolutionary ball gowns and innovative tailoring that continue to influence designers today..."
On the way to the Costume Institute at the Met one passes through the ancient Egyptian Art collection
and that is quite a fitting preamble to see the work of Charles James.
